Cobalt Blue: How To Wear The Color That Looks Fabulous on Everybody!

As we chatted about a few weeks ago, when discussing the Pantone Color of the Year, Viva Magenta, adding color to your wardrobe is an easy way to update your look. So I likely do not need to go deep into why to infuse color into your wardrobe. Instead, I want to talk about another color that is coming in hot right now, meaning you’re going to be seeing it popping up everywhere. And adding this color to your wardrobe will be an instant updater.

The same rules regarding wearing color apply no matter the color you’re using. You can learn about how to successfully and easily integrate color into your wardrobe, here, and here, and here.

Cobalt Blue - The Universally Flattering Color

Blue, cobalt blue to be exact, is the other color, in addition to magenta that feels fresh right now. And the best part of it is that cobalt blue literally LOOKS GOOD ON EVERYONE.

But let’s answer the question as to why cobalt looks good on so many people?

Let me explain…

You know how political candidates and newscasters often wear cobalt blue? There’s a reason for it. The color is powerful, looks great on camera and makes a statement.

Why Cobalt Blue is a great color:

  1. Cobalt is considered a clean blue - which means it is neither warm or cool, therefore rendering it attractive on everyone!

  2. As blues go, cobalt is one that walks the fine line - it makes a statement but is not too brash, so it’s great for those that are color shy.

  3. Cobalt literally works with almost every other color. Black, navy, camel, grey, white, orange, green and all other shades of blue as well.

  4. From a color psychology perspective, blue symbolizes trust, truth, tranquility, cleanliness and contentment.

  5. Blue is associated with beauty in nature - think blue skies, and the blue of the sea…and because of this, there is a positive association.

As I mentioned above, cobalt blue works well with pretty much the entire rainbow. Pair it with black, navy, white, camel, red, orange and green - experiment, it’s hard to go wrong.

Mix it with neutrals

Cobalt + grey = understated elegance

Think traditional

Cobalt and white feels fresh, crisp and nautical

Go natural

Cobalt mixed with green harkens to a natural watery palette

Mixed metals

Because cobalt is a clean blue, both silver and gold accents work equally well and look elegant

Use it to cool things down

Throw in a dash of cobalt to ground a hot red and orange color scheme

Monochromatic

Wearing head to toe cobalt can seem like a lot however because it is a more approachable blue, it really works.

Pair it with denim

Cobalt looks fantastic with all denim hues.

Blue tone on tone

Use cobalt as the start and then add other shades of blue - like powder blue or turquoise. You can do a little or a lot - whatever your comfort level is. And you might be surprised how much you like wearing color.
