Decode the Dress Code: What To Wear To a Summer Wedding

What To Wear To Summer Wedding

Have the summer wedding invitations started coming in? I thought so… I’ve received quite a few messages asking for dress suggestions. I’ve also received some panicked messages wondering what dress is appropriate to wear to what event. Because, you know, that whole dress code thing can be uber confusing. That’s why I started this decode the dress code series - to take the mystery out of those creative yet baffling dress codes.

So, needless to say, you’re not alone. Choosing what to wear to a summer wedding can be tricky. You want to look fabulous, but also be comfortable, especially in the hot weather. The invitation sometimes gives you hints like the location, venue, and dress code. And often, checking the couple's wedding website can give you more details on what to wear.

If you're still unsure, looking at photos of the venue might help. Keep in mind that an outfit for a garden wedding in the daytime will be very different from one for an evening event at a fancy country club. I've listed some common summer wedding dress codes below, along with some tips on what to wear. This should help you find the perfect outfit for any summer wedding.

Summer Wedding Dress Codes

Elegant Summer Wedding Attire

Elegant summer wedding attire typically means white tie and black tie dress codes. White tie is less typical these days, however black tie is quite common. A long gown in lightweight materials like chiffon, silk or crepe will never steer you wrong. However, the term 'formal attire' has evolved to include a dress code slightly less formal than black tie or black tie optional, where a full-length gown may not be mandatory, but would be perfectly appropriate even if not required.. When in doubt, always lean towards dressing more formally. What’s the saying? Better to be overdressed than underdressed.

To make your outfit summer-ready, and current, consider asymmetry like one-shoulder sleeves or fun prints. Accessories will also help finish your look - think statement earrings, an attention-grabbing headpiece, or luxurious footwear to seal the deal.

Beach/Garden Summer Wedding Attire

Beach or garden summer wedding outfits need careful consideration because you're getting dressed up, but you will be outside. It’s a situation where fashion and function meet.  Look for breathable fabrics and easy-going accessories like flat sandals or sturdy block heels that work for both the heat and uneven ground. And if a pump is more your jam, these are great so your heels don’t sink in the grass. Beach and garden weddings are a perfect time to experiment with prints - think palm patterns, color blocking, florals, and rattan textures.

Cocktail & Semi-Formal Summer Wedding Attire

For a semi-formal summer wedding, the aim is to strike a balance between formal and casual. Evening affairs can call for darker, more formal hues, while light colors and fabrics are ideal for daytime weddings. Remember, the term 'semi-formal' still has 'formal' in it, meaning the goal is to maintain an element of elegance. Yes, you can leave your ball gown at home, but a casual barbeque look is a no-go. An airy midi dress in summer colors and fabrics would be perfect.

Casual Summer Wedding Attire

Casual wedding attire leaves a lot of room for creativity, but denim, shorts and tank tops are generally considered inappropriate unless specified otherwise. No matter how relaxed the summer wedding may appear, it's best to err on the side of caution and avoid jeans and flip-flops. Assume a 'business casual' dress code for these weddings.

Themed Wedding Attire

Themed weddings like 'rustic chic', 'vintage glamor, or 'boho elegance' can be an exciting yet perplexing dress code to interpret. When faced with such themes, consider the essence of the style. For instance, a 'rustic chic' wedding might call for earth tones and natural fabrics, while 'vintage glamor' could be an opportunity to wear a flapper dress reminiscent of the 1920s. Boho elegance might call for a flowy maxi dress with intricate lace details and a flower crown. In any case, ensure your outfit reflects the theme without compromising your comfort.

Summer Wedding Guest Attire

With these general guidelines for the different summer wedding dress codes, you should have a better idea of what to wear as a guest. But I have a few more style tips and tricks to share! Here are a few more to help you navigate the warm-weather wedding season:

Comfort is Queen

Our first rule of thumb? Comfort comes first. When the sun is shining, and the temperatures are soaring, you don't want to be stuck in an outfit that's making you hot and bothered. Remember, you're there to enjoy the event, not to fiddle with uncomfortable clothing!

Embrace Summer Colors

Summer weddings are the perfect occasion to showcase vibrant, cheerful colors. Think soft pastels that mimic the summer sky, floral prints, or jewel tones that stand out beautifully in the sunlight. However, PRO TIP: white and cream are traditionally reserved for the bride, so it's best to steer clear of these shades, unless the invitation states it is a white wedding.

Accessorize with Style

Accessories can elevate your wedding guest attire and make it seasonally and occasion appropriate. For example, carrying your work bag with your cocktail dress is a no-no. Pick a smaller clutch that aligns with the color scheme and dressiness of your outfit.

As for jewelry, consider pieces that work well with your outfit but don’t overwhelm it. For example, if your dress is heavily patterned, opt for simpler jewelry. Conversely, a plain outfit can be spruced up with statement pieces.

Be Prepared with a Wrap

Even the warmest summer days can turn into cool nights. That's why we recommend bringing along a lightweight shawl, pashmina, cardigan or jacket. Choose one that complements your outfit for a look that's both practical and stylish.

Stay Sun-Safe

Don't forget, you're at a summer event, and that means sun protection is a must. Bring your sunglasses and sunscreen to keep those harmful rays at bay. Trust me, a sunburn is never a good look!

Comfort and Practicality

While it's important to look good, you also want to feel good. Dress for the weather, keeping in mind that summer temperatures can soar. Fabrics like cotton, linen, or chiffon can help you keep cool. Also, consider the practicality of your outfit. If the wedding is outdoors, you might need a lightweight cover-up for when the temperature drops in the evening.

Summer Wedding Guest Attire: Do’s and Don’ts

Do Embrace Colors and Patterns

Summer weddings are the perfect occasion to embrace vibrant colors and fun patterns. Floral prints and bold colors are perfect for the season.

Do Consider the Venue and Time

The location and time of the wedding can dictate how formal your outfit should be. Beach weddings usually call for lighter, more casual attire, while evening weddings at formal venues may require something more sophisticated.

Do Opt for Breathable Fabrics

Stay cool and comfortable by choosing dresses in lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or chiffon.

Do Choose Comfortable Footwear

Avoid sinking into the grass at outdoor venues by opting for wedges or flats instead of stilettos. Remember, you'll probably be on your feet a lot!

Do Accessorize

Accessories can really pull an outfit together. Consider a stylish hat for a daytime outdoor wedding or a statement jewelry piece for a formal affair.

Don't Wear White

Unless specified by the couple, avoid wearing white to not distract from the bride.

Don't Overdress or Underdress

Respect the dress code specified in the wedding invitation. If in doubt, it's better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.

Don't Forget a Layer

Even in summer, evenings can get cool, especially if the wedding is outdoors. Bring along a light shawl or jacket just in case.

Don't Upstage the Couple

While you should aim to look your best, remember that this day is about the couple. Avoid overly flashy outfits or anything that might take attention away from them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear black to a summer wedding?

While summer weddings often feature bright, cheerful colors, there's nothing wrong with wearing black. Especially in a warm weather fabric like linen or cotton. The fabric choice will help make wearing black feel more summer-y.

Is it necessary to follow the dress code on the wedding invitation?

Yes, it's VERY important to respect the couple's wishes as indicated by the dress code on the invitation. It helps ensure a certain level of harmony and cohesion at the event. And remember, you’re a guest at the wedding and your job is to support and celebrate the couple - so this is a time to play by their rules.

Can I wear jeans to a casual summer wedding?

NO! Unless specifically stated on the invitation. If it is a denim and diamonds theme, then yes, wear your jeans!! While "casual" may suggest a relaxed dress code, it's always better to err on the side of caution. Opt for a sundress, skirt, or nice pants instead of jeans.

What is the best material to wear to a summer wedding to stay cool?

Light, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or chiffon. They can help you stay cool, and still look chic at a summer wedding.

What’s the moral of the story? Dressing for a summer wedding doesn't need to be stressful. Once you've decoded the dress code, also consider the venue, time of day, and weather. Remember, while it's important to respect the formality of the occasion, comfort shouldn’t be compromised, because if you’re uncomfortable in what you’re wearing, it’s harder to have fun and celebrate the happy couple. And at the end of the day, that is the reason you’re there. Hopefully, with these tips, you're well-equipped to be the best-dressed guest at any summer wedding.
