How To Wear A Sheer Top And Look Elegant

How to Make a Sheer Top Elegant

A few weeks ago Hallie walked into one of her fave local boutiques, Haven in Chagrin Falls. And this very sheer turtleneck top literally jumped into her hands! She loved it, but had some reservation. It was really sheer, and a turtleneck, so it could only be worn in the colder months. And it was kind of racy, like practically see through, so it would need to be styled in an elegant way. Because the “sexy” factor was high it was more P.M. appropriate than grocery store attire.

Taking Our Own Shopping Advice

In making this decision, Hallie used the advice we give clients... To think of at least 3 pieces in their closet an item can go with, AND an actual place, event or life role to wear it to, before pulling the trigger (aka swiping the card). That way, they’ll know the piece won’t just hang in their closet with the tags on, it will actually get worn!

Since Hallie spends more time at Heinen’s (for you non CLE folks, that’s our grocery store) than the Flats (and that’s the bar scene), she’d need to find somewhere to wear it. Basically, that was the challenge, to figure out how to style this unique and very sheer top in multiple, elegant ways and have places in mind to wear it... or it didn’t get to come home. The doctor was now the patient.

JUST SO YOU KNOW... Most of the clothes in these photos are available at Haven. Call (216.577.5909), email or stop in and see Cori. She can hook you up with the items pictured and she even has a special little something in store for TWC readers. So make sure to tell her you saw it here.

How to Wear it and Where to Wear it : 1 top 4 ways

1. Wear it for New Year’s Eve. Pair it with a skirt. Because Hallie’s top in the photos is simple it easily works with a statement skirt like this sequined midi. If the top is more of a statement, keep the skirt simple.

2. Wear it on a Thursday for a GNO, with this seasons new favorite jeans. Instead of wearing a tight sheer top with your old skinnies, swap em’ for a higher waisted wide leg cropped jean and sock bootie. That way it’ll look edgy not trashy, just remember to tuck it in to see your waist (and maybe add a belt).

3. Wear it out on a Saturday night. You can wear it with black jeans or, give it a little extra edge with a pair of waxed denim, or leather pants. Then top it off with a blazer (so it doesn’t become too hoochie).

4. Wear it to a Holiday Party. Layer it under a barely there jumpsuit to make the jumpsuit appropriate for the colder months. Or wear it with a wide leg high waisted black slack.

Feeling hesitant about the see thru factor? Don’t. One of the biggest trends we’re seeing for Spring ’18 is sheer or transparent clothing – WWD is calling it transparencies – basically it means clothes that are see thru...

We suggest opaque undergarments to ensure a PG rating and wearing more conservative and covered bottoms and toppers to compliment the sheerness of the top.
