How To Wear Sequins (When it's NOT New Year's Eve)

How To Wear Sequins

Are Sequins Only for NYE and Parties?

Emerging from the holiday season, whether it’s COVID or not, there can be a lot of sparkles and sequins and baubles. It’s the one time of year that we all tend to get a bit more “dressed up”. Once January comes, these “fancier” pieces end up just hanging in our closets, kind of waiting for the next holiday festivity.

In the spirit of No-Buy January, and as an ode to creatively re-using items in your closet (aka, the Shop Your Wardrobe Challenge), I thought now would be the perfect time to dive into how to wear sequins when it’s not NYE.

How to Dress Sequins Down

So You Can Wear Them on a Regular Day

The key to wearing sequins, when it’s not an occasion, is too pair them with your more casual items. One of the fun “trends” to evolve out of the pandemic lockdown was something I’ve heard called Dopamine Dressing.

Basically dopamine dressing is wearing clothes that make you feel happy! In other words, bright colors and sequins and embellishments. Items that typically would be saved for an event and wear them on a typical day - because studies show, dressing up, even a little, can boost your mood.

It’s the Rule of Juxtaposition

The rule of juxtaposition is a game changer for upping your outfits in general, because it creates interest by allowing opposites to attract. And when it comes to sequins, it is very similar. Pairing sparkly, shiny, sequined pieces with more casual, rugged items, like jeans, sneakers or a tee, makes the fancy items, ya know, less fancy.

And conversely, it also ups the dressy factor of the jeans, sneakers or tee, allowing these garments to feel more elevated.

How To Wear Sequins in a More Casual Way: Three Outfits

Again, honoring no-buy January, I’m offering these outfits as idea starters and inspiration. I am linking the items used, just in case you’re interested - or you want to put it on your wish list for next month!

Most of what I used in these looks are items many of us already have in our wardrobes. It’s just re-imagining how to put it all together, to create new ensembles.

Sequined Jacket + Tee Shirt + Jeans

Ohhh how I love this look. The jacket looks stunning over all black for a soiree. And then equally chic with this graphic tee. I gave an option of a slim mockneck in case tee’s are not your thing. Additionally, the distressed, lighter wash denim and chunky boot help dress down the glitz of the jacket. I’d wear this for a GNO or even for a client meeting.

Sequined Top + Baggy Jeans + Boots

This is the same top I was going to wear for NYE with leather joggers and red suede heels (the look got a lotta love on IG). And the idea of wearing the same top but with baggy jeans and a cool belt, felt perfect for a January or February date night. I gave options of two booties, one that is a bit more casual and basic. And the gold studded ones, give it a little more umph, but in an edgy, wearable way.

Sequin Skirt + Sweatshirt + Sneakers

This might be my favorite combination. Pairing a tie dye sweatshirt with a sequined skirt, makes it so wearable in a creative way. I put sneakers in this look but it would also look grand with a chunky bootie, like a combat boot. This would be a great outfit for a day of lunch and shopping or even museum hopping. Comfy and casual but FABULOUS!

And if you are looking to add some sparkle to your wardrobe - for everyday dopamine dressing, or for an occasion, here are some sequined pieces I love!
