How To Wear Shorts with Confidence at Any Age

Let's talk about a staple summer item that every woman should feel confident and fabulous wearing, but yet causes angst for so many… shorts. Shorts can be a tricky item of clothing to style. The right pair can give you an effortlessly chic look, while the wrong choice can leave you feeling uncomfortable and out of place. And yet, for all that, shorts are incredibly versatile and suitable for every age. I'm here to let you know that style knows no age and your wardrobe should make you feel as amazing as you are!

Styles of Shorts

There are countless styles of shorts, and finding the right pair can be a bit of a Goldilocks scenario… you might need to try a few options to find the one that feels right. But here are a few that are universally flattering and trendy.

High-Waisted Shorts

High-waisted shorts are characterized by a waistband that sits at or above your natural waistline. They have been a popular style for several years because they can create the illusion of longer legs and a smaller waist, and are flattering on many body types.

High-waisted shorts can be found in a variety of materials, including denim, cotton, linen, and more, and they can easily be dressed up or down. For a casual look, try pairing them with a tucked-in t-shirt or a shorter top that hits right at the waist band. A crop top works well too if that’s your comfort zone. And for a dressier look, consider a blouse or a blazer. Short suits are showing up everywhere lately, and we will only be seeing more of them. Because the shorts are high-waisted, it's often most flattering to choose a top that can be tucked in or that hits right at the waistline to avoid disrupting the lengthening effect of the shorts.

Bermuda Shorts

These are longer shorts that hit just above the knee and are popular for their ability to offer coverage while still being cooler than full-length pants. They're distinguished by their longer length and can have a straight or slightly narrow cut, but recently I’ve been seeing fuller legged, even pleated bermuda shorts showing up on the fashion girls and looking very chic..

Bermuda shorts are great for those who prefer a bit more coverage or who want a more polished, sophisticated look. They're a wonderful option for business-casual dress codes during warm weather, as they can easily be dressed up with a blazer and a pair of loafers or dressy sandals.

For a more relaxed look, pair Bermuda shorts with a simple t-shirt or a casual button-down. Sneakers or flat sandals can keep the look casual and comfortable. In terms of color and pattern, Bermuda shorts come in a variety of options, so you can choose something that best suits your style, whether that's a neutral shade for versatility or a bold print for a statement piece.

Boyfriend Shorts

Loose and comfy, boyfriend shorts give a casual, laid-back vibe. Boyfriend shorts are designed to look a bit oversized, similar to the idea of "boyfriend jeans" where it appears as if you might have borrowed them from a boyfriend. These shorts tend to be more relaxed and less structured, making them great for casual, comfortable outfits.

The hems of boyfriend shorts are typically cuffed, and they often feature a more relaxed, slouchy fit through the legs. This doesn't mean they have to look sloppy, however. Paired with a fitted top and some accessories like a belt or necklace, boyfriend shorts can be part of a polished, put-together look.

You can dress up boyfriend shorts with a nice blouse and wedges, or go for a more casual look with a graphic tee and sneakers. A belt can also be a great way to cinch in the waist and add a little more structure to the look.

Paperbag Shorts

Paperbag shorts are characterized by their high waist cinched with a belt or ribbon, creating a "ruffled" effect at the waistline that resembles a paper bag. They typically have a loose, flowy fit through the leg, which can be very flattering and comfortable.

Paperbag shorts can easily be dressed up or down depending on what you pair with them. For a more casual look, try a simple tee or tank tucked into the shorts to highlight the unique waistline. For a dressier look, consider a fitted blouse or bodysuit. Because these shorts are fuller, they tend to look best when paired with a slimmer top.

The high waist of paperbag shorts can create the illusion of longer legs and can be especially flattering for those with a defined waist or those who want to create the appearance of a smaller waist. However, because of this waistline, they can be challenging for larger busted women that are also short waisted. These shorts can be found in a variety of colors and materials, making it easy to find a pair that fits your personal style.

Denim Shorts

Denim shorts are a classic summer staple that never really goes out of style. They come in a variety of styles and cuts, including high-waisted, distressed, and boyfriend styles, to name a few.

Wear them similarly to your favorite pair of jeans -  with a pretty blouse and a pair of heels for going out, or keep it casual with a simple tee or tank and some comfortable sandals or sneakers. Because denim shorts are usually fairly simple, they're a great piece to pair with bolder tops or accessories.

The most common color for denim shorts is, of course, blue, but they can also be found in black, white, or even colored denim. A popular trend is distressed denim shorts, which have a worn-in look that can add an edgy touch to your outfit.

Culotte Shorts

Culotte shorts are wide-legged shorts that resemble a skirt. They're stylish and offer comfort and flexibility. They are usually high-waisted and tend to be wide-legged, making them a comfortable and stylish choice, particularly for hot weather. They can be very versatile, depending on what you pair them with.

As with the other shorts style mentioned, casually pair them with tees and tanks and more everyday shoes like a flat sandal. For a more professional look, try a slim top or blouse, and consider pairing with heels or wedges to add length to your legs due to the wide fit of the shorts.

Picking the Perfect Pair

Understanding Your Comfort Level

When it comes to fashion, comfort is queen. If you're not feeling comfortable in your shorts, it can be hard to walk around with confidence. Prioritize comfort and functionality over trends. The best shorts for you are the shorts that you feel best in. This often means trying out several pairs before finding the right one, but it will be worth it!

Length is Key

There's no hard and fast rule for the perfect length of shorts; it's all about personal preference. However, a good rule of thumb is to opt for shorts that hit the thickest part of your thighs. This can flatter your figure and give the illusion of slimmer legs. Especially if you opt for a short that has a wider leg opening.

Know Your Body Shape

Shorts come in various styles and lengths, and the key to wearing them confidently is finding a style that complements your body shape. Embrace your unique features, and remember - the goal isn't to fit into the shorts, but to find shorts that fit you!

REMEMBER: While your body shape can guide you in selecting the most flattering shorts, the most crucial factor is your comfort and confidence in what you wear.

Essential Tips for Styling Shorts

The golden rule for styling shorts is to maintain a visual balance. If you're wearing short shorts, pair them with a more modest top. High-waisted shorts look great with tucked-in tops or crop tops. A monochrome look can help elongate your silhouette if that's what you're aiming for.

Avoid wearing shorts that are too small or large for you. Shorts that are too tight may cause discomfort, while baggy shorts can look unkempt. Always try before you buy!

Pairing the right top, shoes, and accessories with your shorts can make or break your outfit. Consider the occasion, the weather, and your comfort when making these choices.

What Tops To Wear With Shorts

Pairing your shorts with the right top can transform your outfit from average to exceptional. A flowing blouse paired with tailored shorts provides a balanced, elegant look, while a fitted tank top complements high-waisted shorts beautifully. Always consider the occasion, the weather, and your comfort level when pairing your shorts with a top.

What Shoes To Wear With Shorts

Footwear can change the vibe of your outfit. Sandals or sneakers usually offer a casual look, while heels can dress up your shorts for a more formal occasion.

PRO TIP: Choose a shoe in a color that is close to your skin tone to make your legs appear longer.

Tips For Wearing Shorts With Confidence

There are a variety of reasons that women may feel self-conscious in shorts. I often hear clients say that they can’t wear shorts because they feel like their thighs are too heavy or their legs are too pale. First I just want to say - if you feel good in shorts, wear them! There is nothing you need to “fix” in order to wear shorts. However, if those self-conscious feelings are holding you back from wearing shorts, I have some styling tips that may help!

If you’re self conscious about your thighs:

  • Opt for dark-colored shorts as they help give a slimming effect.

  • Choose shorts that are mid-thigh or knee-length as they can help elongate your legs and create a balanced silhouette.

  • Avoid shorts with large, busy patterns or excessive embellishments around the thigh area.

  • High-waisted shorts can draw attention to your waist and away from your thighs.

  • A-line shorts can also be more flattering as they won't cling to your thighs.

If you're self-conscious about your skin tone or paleness:

  • Embrace colors that complement your skin tone. For example, earthy colors can make pale skin appear warmer.

  • Try a self-tanning lotion or bronzing cream to give your skin a sun-kissed glow.

  • Draw attention away from your legs by highlighting areas you feel more confident about. A statement necklace or a brightly colored top can draw the eye upward.

If there are other reasons preventing you from feeling confident in shorts:

  • Wear what makes you feel comfortable, whether that's shorts, skirts, capris, or trousers. There's no rule that says you have to wear shorts.

  • Positive self-talk can be a powerful tool. Try to replace negative thoughts with positive ones when you look in the mirror.

  • Remember, everyone has their own unique beauty and style. Don't compare yourself to others; focus on what makes you feel good.

  • Confidence doesn't come overnight, it's a journey. Start by wearing shorts around the house, then on short errands, and build up your comfort level over time.

Seasonal Styling with Shorts

Just because the temperatures are dropping doesn't mean you have to retire your shorts. Here's how to style shorts in every season.

Spring & Summer Shorts

Spring weather can be unpredictable, so it's important to layer your outfits. Pair your shorts with lightweight sweaters or long-sleeve tees for cooler days. A denim jacket or a light cardigan is a great addition for transitional weather.

Summer is synonymous with shorts. Opt for shorts in lighter fabrics like linen or cotton. These materials are breathable and comfortable for the warming temperatures. Pair your favorite shorts with a lightweight top, flip-flops, and a wide-brimmed hat for a beach-ready look. Don't forget your sunnies!

Autumn & Winter Shorts

This one really depends where you live, but autumn generally calls for layering! Wear your shorts with tights and a cozy sweater for a warm yet stylish outfit. And YES, you can wear shorts in winter! Pair them with opaque tights, boots, and a warm coat for a fashionable winter look.
