The Art of Layering Necklaces

how to layer necklaces

Pendants, chains, delicate, chunky – necklaces are awesome, and when you layer them just right, they can seriously take your style to the next level.  But let's be honest, it can be a bit tricky to get it right. So, let’s explore some foolproof ways to layer necklaces like a pro. This is one topic that I am asked about all the time on Instagram and from my clients too, so I’ve put together a comprehensive guide to layering necklaces with easy-to-follow tips and tricks!

The Basics of Layering Necklaces

First up, it's important to understand the essentials of layering necklaces. The purpose of layering isn't merely to wear multiple necklaces; it's to create a combination that tells a story, reflects your personal style, or conveys a particular vibe. Here are some key necklace layering tips to consider:

Play with Lengths and Shapes

Start by picking necklaces of different lengths. Maybe begin with a cute choker, add a mid-length pendant and finally, throw in a long chain. This mix will create depth and visual interest.

Ideally, the necklaces should have different shapes as well. With at least one in the mix being a pendant or bar. This provides interest because the pendant or bar creates a different shape to the chain when it hangs on the neck.

I like to call it “filling up the space”. It’s basically taking the space between your neck and (roughly) your bust (because it may be a bit above or as low as your naval) and filling it by layering necklaces. For instance, begin with one necklace, like a choker that hits above the clavicle, followed by a mid-length pendant that hits between the clavicle and the cleavage, and then add a longer chain.

The goal, especially if you’re new to layering, is to have the necklaces somewhat evenly spaced. Meaning, if there are three necklaces, the amount of skin showing between them is somewhat equidistant.

Mix Materials

Don't be afraid to mix and match different materials and styles. A delicate gold chain can beautifully complement a pearl necklace or a chunky silver piece. If you want to learn more about mixing metals, check out this blog post.

Keep It Balanced and Play!!

Remember, balance doesn’t necessarily mean symmetry. You don’t need to shy away from pairing bulky necklaces with dainty chains (you know I love some juxtaposition!) The key is to make sure the overall look is balanced and pleasing to the eye. Most of the time, this can only be determined by trying it out, so I highly encourage you to play with different necklaces!

Also, make sure to use the adjustable chain options available on many necklaces these days. You know, those three closure circles at the back. This gives you the ability to change where the necklace hits, often be almost 2 inches. Having that length flexibility can make the layering game much easier. Play around and see what length combinations hit best.

Expert Tips for Layering Different Types of Necklaces

Now that you know the basics, let's dive deeper into some expert strategies for different types of necklaces:

Delicate Chains

Delicate chains provide a minimalist, elegant base for layering. Opt for different lengths and perhaps a necklace with a small pendant for an added element of interest. A simple gold or silver chain can serve as a versatile foundation for other necklaces.

Statement Necklaces

If you’re wearing a statement necklace, let it shine! Pair it with less flashy pieces to avoid an overwhelming look. For instance, match your bold turquoise necklace with a few delicate silver chains.

Pendants and Lockets

Pendants and lockets add personal flair to your necklace layering. You can mix different shapes and sizes, or stay within a theme.

Lariats and Y-Necklaces

These longer necklaces add a dramatic flair to your layering. Pair a lariat or a Y-necklace with shorter chains or chokers. The drop down element of these necklaces creates a natural, visually pleasing layering effect.

Pre-layered Sets

When in doubt, opt for a pre-layered set. Many companies make them now and they take most of the guesswork out of layering. AND, once you become a confident layerer you can use the pre-layered set and then add more necklaces to the mix to really give off that neck party vibe!

Necklace Layering Mistakes to Avoid

Of course, even in the fun world of necklace layering, some things might not work as well. Here's what you should watch out for:

How To Layer Necklaces

Overdoing It: Piling on all your necklaces can make your look feel cluttered. Stick to three to four necklaces to keep things neat and stylish.

Forgetting the Neckline: Your outfit’s neckline is super important in determining your necklace layering style. Different necklines call for different types of necklaces. I have a complete visual guide to help you figure out which necklaces will pair best with each neckline in my blog post Necklace Pairings 101!

Same Length Necklaces: Layering necklaces of the same length can get them tangled and won't give you the layering effect you want.

Layered Necklaces FAQs

How do I keep my layered necklaces from tangling?

You’re probably thinking, okay Hallie sure, but I’ll never be able to untangle the chains when I take all of the necklaces off. Trust me, I GET IT. And while this is just a fashion risk you’ll have to be willing to take, there are a few tricks to avoid the dreaded tangling.

Use a Necklace Separator or Detangler

These necklace separators are quite helpful! They have several clasps to keep each necklace in place, preventing them from getting tangled.

Mix Up the Lengths

By wearing necklaces of varying lengths, you can reduce the chance of them getting tangled together. And, it looks better too!

Choose Different Thicknesses

Layering necklaces of different thicknesses can also help prevent tangling as thicker chains are less likely to intertwine with thinner ones

How many necklaces should I layer?

While there's no set rule, a good starting point is to layer three necklaces. This allows you to play with different lengths and styles without overwhelming your look.

Can I mix metals when layering necklaces?

Totally! Mixing metals, like gold and silver, can create a super cool, eclectic look. Don't be afraid to experiment and see what combos you love.

Can I layer necklaces with different pendant sizes?

Yes, you can! In fact, using different pendant sizes can add depth and interest to your look. Just remember to balance – you don't want one pendant to overshadow the others. But again, feel free to play around and see what works for you.

Remember, at the end of the day, the best necklace layering style is the one that makes you feel flipping fabulous! So, go on and get creative. Happy layering!
