The New Way to Style Sweats

Sweats for the WIN-ter

It’s that time of year when I truly want to stay in my PJ’s all day long. I don’t know about you, maybe it’s the cold, or lack of sun, but my motivation level is waaaay low. If I have a day that I can be a homebody, sweats are on the docket for sure. And if I have to actually get dressed and go out (which is most days) then THE MINUTE I get home the comfy clothes are on.

Loungewear and pajamas that are presentable are a must-have for a zillion real-life scenarios, I went in-depth on that subject last year. And, I’ve updated those links so all the items highlighted should be in stock.

Sweatsuits are IN Again

2020 seems to be the year of the sweatsuit. Not athleisure, or loungewear or joggers, but full-fledged, matching top and bottom sweatsuits.

And those sweatsuits can look super cute out of the house too.

You may have noticed a lot of celebrities stepping out in matching sweat sets and that tells me it’s only a matter of time until we see it in a more mainstream way.

These are NOT Juicy Velour Sweats

Please don’t read this and get upset that you gave your 1990’s Juicy Couture velour sweatsuits away. Their time has officially passed. Today’s sweatsuits are different, in a few ways…

  • The bottoms have a higher rise. The 90’s version was during the heyday of low rise, thong bearing, plumbers butts.

  • The proportions are different. The sweatshirts are shorter, to highlight the higher rise.

  • Today’s sweatpants have elastic or ribbing around the ankle not the bootcut silhouette of yesteryear.

How to Style Them Out of the House

The fabulous thing about a sweatsuit is that most of the work is done for you – hello, it’s a matching set, right? And if you’re wearing them at home, there’s no more work to be done. But as I mentioned earlier, these sweatsuits look great out of the house too.

Perfect for travel, or post-workout, or just running errands. For most, this is not appropriate work attire. But it is perfect off duty attire that lets you be all cozy but still look put together.

  • Pair them with chunky sneakers for an athletic look.

  • Or wear them with combat boots for a little edge.

  • Throw a jacket over it. I put an old bomber over mine. It also looks great with a cloth overcoat, leather jacket or an oversized blazer.

  • If there’s a hood, pull it out of the jacket and it serves as neck detail, no need for a scarf.

This whole coordinated casual sweatsuit sets is just on the cusp, so it might feel too new right now to start wearing a set tomorrow. But be on the lookout, I think you’re going to see more and more of them and they really are so comfy (and cute).
