What to Wear to a Wedding Shower: 6 Pretty Dresses for Every Kind of Shower

What to Wear to a Wedding Shower

There's a very specific little panic that hits when a wedding shower invitation lands. It's not a wedding, so you don't want to go full gown. But it's also not Sunday brunch at the Pancake House with your girlfriends, so athleisure is out. Then there's the actual bride to think about, a venue you've maybe never been to, and whatever the weather decides to do that day.

Here's the good news: showers are honestly one of the most fun dress codes to play with. Think pretty, feminine, a little elevated, and comfortable enough to sit through gift-opening and a round of "how well do you know the bride."

My one rule is to leave the white, ivory, and cream for the guest of honor. After that, it's all about picking something that makes you feel great and fits the vibe of the day. So I pulled six dresses I'm a little obsessed with right now, from soft and sunny to a touch more dressed up. There's something here for a garden brunch, a restaurant luncheon, and everything in between.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Match the venue. A backyard shower and a hotel tea call for slightly different energy. When in doubt, lean a little more polished. It's always better to feel put-together.

  • Embrace the season. Showers practically beg for spring and summer color, soft prints, and pretty florals. This is your moment.

  • Comfort counts. You'll be standing, mingling, and sitting for a while, so pick something you can actually relax in.

1. The Buttery Yellow Column

La Ligne Crepe & Silk Chiffon Dress

Soft yellow is having a real moment, and it is just so pretty on. This sleeveless style has a clean, sleek line up top with a sheer chiffon skirt that adds the prettiest movement when you walk. It feels modern and a little unexpected without trying too hard, which makes it perfect for a daytime or luncheon shower.

I kept mine light and summery with a raffia clutch and my favorite clear heels, plus a pop of turquoise at the neck for a little color.

2. The Romantic Paisley Maxi

Annie Silk Halter Dress

If your shower is outdoors, or you just want to feel a little floaty and romantic, this is the one. The soft paisley print, high halter neck, and fringe down the front feel special and elevated, and the maxi length is so forgiving and easy to move in.

Trust me, this is the dress you'll happily wear all afternoon. A heeled sandal and you're done.

3. The Garden Party Shirt Dress

For the woman who feels most like herself in something with a little structure, a floral shirt dress is the move.

I love this one because the collar and button front feel classic and pulled together, while the big, happy florals keep it from feeling stuffy. The fit-and-flare skirt is universally flattering. I went with magenta heels for a fun pop, but a nude or metallic would be just as pretty.

4. The Cocktail-Ready Midi

Teri Jon Mikado Sleeveless Floral Print Dress

Headed to a fancier shower, such as a tea at a nice hotel or a more formal afternoon? This ice-blue hydrangea midi is it. The structured A-line, the bow at the waist, and that gorgeous print feel polished and special without veering into wedding-guest territory. It's the kind of dress people stop to compliment.

5. The Florals-on-Dark Midi

Here's the thing about a dark floral: you'll reach for it again and again. The deep base makes it feel a little more grown-up and less precious than a pastel, so it works for a shower now and a dinner out later. The deep V and the florals trailing down the skirt are such pretty details.

If you want one dress that really earns its place in your closet, this is a strong pick.

6. The Showstopper Maxi

Want something with a little more drama? This deep navy maxi is it. The cream floral appliqué cascading down the front does all the work, so you can keep everything else simple and let the dress be the moment.

The scalloped plunge neckline and breezy linen make it feel elegant and effortless at the same time, perfect for a sunset shower or a destination weekend.

We just had the most wonderful shower for my future DIL. It’s the first of two; this one was in NY and the next will be in Ohio (and I’ll be wearing one of the above dresses to the Ohio shower).  I’m including a few photos and linking what both my mom and I wore. I’ll also do a recap of the entire shower over on Instagram.
