How to Wear a Funnel Neck This Fall (At Any Age)

How to wear a funnel neck at any age

If you've walked into a store lately, you've seen it. The funnel neck is on jackets, on blouses, on sweaters, on the mannequin by the front door and the one in the back. It's the neckline of fall 2026, and I'm here to tell you it's one of the most wearable trends I've seen in a long time.

I also know what some of you are thinking.. Too sporty. Too young. Too much happening around my face. Trust me, I hear this in closets every week. And every week I put one on a client and watch her change her mind.

So let's break it down by type, because a funnel neck jacket and a funnel neck sweater are two very different things, and you might love one and skip the other. Both are fine. That's a healthy wardrobe!

What Is a Funnel Neck?

A funnel neck stands up and flares slightly away from the neck, wider at the top than the base. It doesn't fold over like a turtleneck and it doesn't hug like a mock neck. It sits away from you with a little room to breathe.

Quick cheat sheet:

  • Turtleneck: fitted, folds over, hugs the neck

  • Mock neck: short, fitted, stands up, no fold

  • Funnel neck: stands up, flares out, sits away from the neck

That last bit is why I love it. You get the polish and coverage of a high neckline without the "someone is gently choking me" feeling. If you've ever yanked off a turtleneck by 2pm, keep reading.

Why the Funnel Neck Works for Women Over 40

It frames your face. The neckline pulls the eye up toward your jawline and cheekbones. Add a great earring and you're done.

It covers without clinging. So many of my clients want neck coverage but hate the squeeze. This gives you structure instead.

It adds instant polish. A funnel neck jacket with jeans and a tee looks like an outfit. A crewneck cardigan with the same jeans and tee looks like you got dressed. Same effort, elevated result.

Funnel Neck Jackets (Start Here)

This is where I'd tell you to begin if you're new to the trend, and it's where I've been living all September. A funnel neck jacket does three jobs at once: it's your outer layer, your statement piece, and your scarf on the days you can't be bothered. Here's how I've been wearing mine.

Hallie wearing an olive Lioness Shoreline windbreaker with a funnel neck collar, styled two ways: with a black lace-inset midi skirt and black croc-print heeled boots, and with black joggers and white sneakers.

The sporty one, dressed up

A windbreaker over a skirt sounds wrong until you see it. The Lioness Shoreline is technically a track jacket, but the olive color and the funnel collar make it feel intentional over a long black skirt with a little lace detail and a pointed croc boot.

This is the rule of juxtaposition that I swear by: one piece that's sporty, one piece that's a little sexy, and a shoe that pulls it together.

Hallie wearing an olive Aritzia Geneva funnel neck jacket over a white tee with cream wide-leg jeans, styled two ways: with tan sandals, and with a red and black paisley scarf and tan suede sneakers.

The easy one

The Aritzia Geneva Jacket in City Twill is the definition of a throw-on-and-go layer. Olive again (there's a theme, and the theme is that olive is a neutral), zipped up halfway over a white tee, cream wide-leg jeans, and a flat sandal for the last warm days.

Swap the sandal for a loafer or a suede boot the second the temperature drops and nothing else has to change. That's a fashion formula you'll use until December.

The elevated one

Chocolate brown is the color of fall (more on that in a couple weeks), and this Alice + Olivia James cropped jacket in glossy faux leather is the grown-up version of the trend.

The cropped length hits right at the waist, which means it shows off a great belt and a high-rise jean. I wore it open over a black satin funnel neck top, which brings me to the next section.

Hallie in an olive quilted BLANKNYC Ice Cold jacket with light denim trim and a denim funnel neck collar, white tee, cream wide-leg jeans, and tan suede pointed-toe boots.

The one with personality

Quilted olive with denim trim and a denim funnel collar. The BLANKNYC Ice Cold Jacket is doing a lot, and I love it for that. Because the jacket is the whole story, I kept everything else quiet: the same cream wide-leg jeans and a tan suede pointed boot.

My rule with a busy jacket is one statement, then get out of its way.

Funnel Neck Tops and Blouses

The top version of the funnel neck is the sleeper hit of the season. A satin or silky funnel neck top does two things beautifully: it looks dressy with zero effort, and it layers under every open jacket you own without any collar competing with it.

That black satin top under the Alice + Olivia jacket above is the perfect example. On its own with jeans and a heel, it's a going-out top. Under a blazer, it's a work top. Under the brown faux leather jacket, it's the thing that makes the whole outfit feel expensive.

Look for:

  • Satin or silky fabrics for evening and layering

  • Ponte or thicker knits for a more structured, daytime version

  • Sleeveless funnel necks now, long sleeve once it's cold

Funnel Neck Sweaters

And yes, the sweaters. This is the version most people picture when they hear "funnel neck," and it's the coziest one. Two things to know:

Fabric weight changes everything. A chunky funnel neck sweater is a weekend piece: jeans, sneakers, done. A fine-gauge one layers under a coat and can absolutely go to work with trousers.

Tuck something. All that volume up top with an untucked hem can go boxy fast. A front tuck or a half tuck into a high-rise jean or pant keeps your proportions balanced. This is the number one fix I make in fitting rooms.

My Rules for Styling Any Funnel Neck

Keep the bottom half quiet. The neckline is the statement. Let it be the statement.

Hair and earrings matter more than usual. The eye goes straight to your face, so a low pony, a sleek blowout, or a simple hoop or drop earring all look amazeballs. Skip the big statement necklace. It's fighting the collar and the collar wins.

Olive and chocolate brown are your entry points. Notice how many of the pieces above are one or the other? They're the neutrals of the season and they work with everything you already own.

Zip it halfway. On a jacket, halfway up gives you the funnel shape without hiding your whole top. Fully zipped is for actual weather.

Ready to Try It?

If you've been circling this trend and talking yourself out of it, consider this your sign. Start with a jacket, wear it over what you already own, and see how it feels. I'm betting you'll be back for the top.

And if you want help figuring out which fall trends belong in your closet (and which ones you can happily skip), that's exactly what a styling session is for.

xo, Hallie
