The 5 Jeans I Wear on Repeat

Personal Stylist Hallie Abrams shares the 5 pairs of jeans that she wears on repeat

I get asked about jeans more than almost anything else. Which rise, which leg, which wash, and the big one: "Can I actually wear that?"

Jeans are the foundation of a healthy wardrobe. If your denim works, getting dressed gets easier every single day. If it doesn't, you'll fight your closet every morning and blame everything else in it.

So I'm sharing the five pairs I reach for on repeat. These aren't trend picks. Every one of these has earned its spot through real life: client meetings, school pickup, dinners, travel. And I've put clients of every shape and size in these jeans and watched them light up in the dressing room. (If you want the wider field, I tried on more than 20 pairs and reviewed every single one.)

Some are for the woman who wants to try a new silhouette. Some are for the woman who wants her comfort jean back. There's a pair here for you.

1. Paige Anessa

The Wide Leg for Women Who Think They Can't Wear Wide Leg

Personal stylist Hallie Abrams wearing Paige Anessa high rise wide leg jeans three ways: with a striped cardigan, a cropped denim jacket over white jeans, and a navy satin blouse

Who it's for: Anyone who's been curious about wide leg jeans but nervous about the proportions.

This is THE wide-leg jean for women who think they can't wear wide-leg jeans.

The Anessa is high-rise with a slightly relaxed fit and a 33" inseam, cut from Paige's Transcend Vintage denim. That fabric is doing a lot of work here. The Transcend gives you that signature Paige comfort (it moves with you all day), and the Vintage character means it has a rich, lived-in look instead of feeling stiff.

Here's the move: the Anessa works on genuinely all body types. I don't say that about a lot of jeans. The high rise lengthens and defines the waist, the relaxed leg balances your proportions, and the longer inseam gives you the full effect of the silhouette.

How to wear it: Dark wash for dinner. Medium wash for daytime. Tuck it into boots, wear it with sneakers, throw a long cardigan over it (and yes, the topper length matters more than you'd think). It's a closet workhorse. Full stop.

2. Nili Lotan Shon

The Barrel Jean I've Worn for Five Years

Hallie Abrams styling Nili Lotan Shon barrel jeans with a white blouse and suede flats, a ruffled white top on vacation, and a navy tee with fisherman sandals

Who it's for: The barrel-curious woman who hasn't committed yet.

I want to be clear about something: I have been wearing these jeans for over five years. Before the barrel jean became the thing everyone was arguing about on the internet. Before the "is the barrel jean over" discourse (it's not, and I'll die on that hill).

The Shon is a mid-rise bow leg cut in premium Japanese stretch denim, and it is genuinely one of the most flattering silhouettes I've ever put on. The curved inseam gives the leg that signature rounded shape, and the articulated knee detail adds just enough structure to keep it from reading as sloppy. It's relaxed without being baggy. It's cool without trying.

I've described it to clients as utilitarian and sexy at the same time, which sounds like a contradiction until you put it on.

How to wear it: Keep the top fitted or tucked so the leg shape does the talking. A slim knit, a crisp button-down, a great loafer.

3. Nili Lotan Meg

The Jean That Feels Like a Trouser

Nili Lotan Meg wide leg jeans in white with a cream cardigan, and in denim with a cream halter top and a white button-down with a sweater over the shoulders

SHOP THE LOOKS: Outfit 1 | Outfit 2 | Outfit 3

Who it's for: The woman who wants her jeans to feel polished enough for work, dinner, and everything in between.

Yes, I own this in both washes. No, I'm not embarrassed.

The Meg is a mid-rise, ankle-length wide leg, and it's one of the most polished-feeling jeans I own. The construction is deliberately minimal: no front pockets, no side seams, clean lines everywhere. It's fitted through the waist and hips and opens into a relaxed, wide leg with this beautiful drape that makes it feel more like a great trouser than a typical jean.

The white version is my other staple. I know white jeans feel scary to a lot of women (they're not, I promise!), but the Meg in white is genuinely the pair that converts people. It's effortless with a linen top, a striped tee, or a breezy blouse. The denim version is more year-round. I've worn it to client meetings. Dinners. Vacations. It does a lot.

How to wear it: Treat it like a trouser. Blazer and a heel, or a tucked tee and a flat.

4. Mother The Mid Rise Dazzler

My Comfort Jean

Hallie Abrams wearing Mother Dazzler mid rise straight leg jeans with a blue striped button-down, a brown embroidered tunic, and a pinstripe shirt with loafers

SHOP THE LOOKS: Outfit 1 | Outfit 2 | Outfit 3

Who it's for: Anyone newer to experimenting with denim, or anyone who just wants to get dressed and not think about it.

This is my comfort jean. The one I come back to when I want to get dressed and move on with my day.

The Dazzler is Mother's most popular mid-rise straight leg, and it hits right at the ankle with a clean hem. It's made from stretch denim in their We The Animals wash, a classic 90s-inspired fade with whiskering that gives it that perfectly broken-in feel. It looks like you've had the jeans forever, in the best possible way.

Here's the thing: the Dazzler lives right in between a straight leg and a skinny, which makes it incredibly versatile. It tucks into boots beautifully. It works with sneakers, loafers, heels. It doesn't demand much from you. Every single time I want my comfort jean, this is the one.

If the barrel or wide leg feels like a big leap, start here. The Dazzler is familiar enough to feel easy and current enough to feel fresh.

How to wear it: Honestly, anything. Boots and a sweater, sneakers and a tee, loafers and a blazer.

5. AYR Secret Sauce

The Jean That Fits Like It Was Made for You

AYR Secret Sauce straight leg jeans styled with an embroidered white blazer, a navy double-breasted blazer and tan heels, and a white blouse with clear sandals

SHOP THE LOOKS: Outfit 1 | Outfit 2 | Outfit 3

Who it's for: Every woman who's been wearing jeans in the wrong length without realizing it (which is more of us than you'd think).

The name says everything. This is AYR's most universally loved style, and once you try them you'll understand the hype.

The Secret Sauce is fitted through the waist and hip with a flattering loose straight leg, and it comes in three lengths (S, R, and L) so it actually fits like it was made for you. My general guide: S for 5'5" and below, R for 5'6" to 5'8", L for 5'9" and above. That length system is one of the things that sets AYR apart. So many women are wearing jeans in the wrong length (and if you're not sure whether you're a true petite or just short, that post will help), and this takes the guesswork out completely.

The denim has the perfect amount of stretch. A quiet, premium stretch that holds all day and moves with you, instead of the overtly stretchy feel that loses its shape by noon. Made in L.A., and you can feel the quality.

How to wear it: I reach for these when I want to look pulled together without overthinking it. They're the jean equivalent of a great white tee: simple, reliable, always right.

Which Pair Should You Start With?

Quick guide if you're skimming:

My rule: you don't need all five. You need the two or three that match your real life. That's what a balanced wardrobe looks like.

And if these price points aren't in the budget right now, that's okay. I rounded up the best jeans under $100 so you can get the same silhouettes without the splurge.

Jeans FAQ

What's the most flattering jean for women over 40?

The one that fits your waist, hits at the right length, and matches how you actually live. Fit matters more than trend. That said, a high or mid rise with a straight or slightly wide leg (like the Anessa or Dazzler) is a great starting point for almost everyone.

Are barrel jeans still in style?

Yes. I've worn the Shon for five years and I'm not stopping. Silhouettes like this stick around when they're flattering, and this one is.

How do I know if my jeans are the wrong length?

If you're constantly hemming, cuffing, or catching your hem under your shoe, the length is off. Brands with multiple inseam options (AYR is a great example) solve this without a tailor.

Can I wear white jeans in the fall?

Absolutely. Pair the Meg in white with a camel sweater, a leather jacket, or a chunky knit. It reads intentional, not summery. I have a whole post on wearing white jeans in cold weather if you want more.
